George Harrison, guitarist and songwriter, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice -- once as a member of The Beatles and once for his solo work. His long and celebrated career spanned several decades and he is responsible for writing some of the most iconic songs of the rock era including While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, My Sweet Lord, and many others. His work as a session musician and record producer can be heard on many top 40 hits and his influence as a songwriter is still felt today.
His Concert for Bangladesh benefit concert was the first of its kind and inspired future shows such as Live Aid to use music as a fundraising force. He is also credited for popularizing classical Indian music among western pop listeners through his study of the sitar and his lifelong work with virtuoso Ravi Shankar.
After fighting cancer and a knife wielding intruder in his home, Harrison passed away at the age of 58 in 2001. Former bandmate, Paul McCartney, often pays tribute to his fallen friend in concerts.
