Metallica have been performing since 1981 and are one of the originators of "thrash metal". The band have sold millions of albums world wide and were first ballot inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their second year of eligibility.
The band's self-titled album, also known as The Black Album, was their fifth and was released in 1991. The album would eventually be certified 16 times platinum, commemorating over 16,000,000 units sold, and rank among the top 25 albums of all time. Metallica has maintained lead singer James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich for the entirety of their career and Kirk Hammett has been playing lead guitar for nearly as long leaving the role of bass player the most divided in the band with four men playing the instrument.
