The New York Jets were founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York as a charter member of the American Football League. In 1963 the team changed names to the New York Jets and in 1970 they were a part of the AFL-NFL merger, joining the new AFC East.

The team won Super Bowl III in 1968 and has never returned to the big game despite several playoff berths. The New York Jets currently play in MetLife Stadium, sharing the grounds with the New York Giants.

Several Hall of Fame inductees have played for the New York Jets, most notably Joe Namath, Don Maynard, and Curtis Martin who have all had their numbers retired by the team
