The Seattle Mariners were founded in 1977 after a legal battle between baseball and the city of Seattle, King County and State of Washington over their handling of the Seattle Pilots in 1970. The Pilots played just one season in Seattle when they were acquired by Bud Selig and moved to Milwaukee as the Brewers.

The team is one of two to never appear in a World Series, a distinction shared with the Washington Nationals, despite three division titles and a 116 win regular season (2001).
